"You won't catch me!" Merrick teased lightheartedly, weaving his way through the trees of the forest. As he ran, he glanced behind himself to check if his pursuer was still there.
"Oh, yes I will!" Opaline hollered back in a sing-song tone. Brunette curls flowing behind her, she chased after her son at a moderate pace with her green skirt hiked up around her knees.
"Never!" Merrick playfully denied, pushing himself to run faster. He barely noticed as flurries of snow began to softly descend from above, lightly coating his dark hair.
"Ephane!" His mother's voice suddenly giggling out the name of his dead father caused the young boy to stop in his tracks. Spinning around, he looked for his mother, who was supposedly on his trail.
He couldn't see her anymore.
Standing there, continuing to search the area with his confused and worried blue eyes, it quickly became harder to see as the snow quickly fell harder and harder, the ice pelting his tunic and soaking it through. Merrick started to run backwards in the direction he had last seen his mother, hurrying to find her before the bad weather progressed further.
"Mother!" Though the thick snow layered the ground around him, Merrick found it easy-going to rush through the ice. "MOTHER!"
A frantic state of mind came over the boy when he received no reply from Opaline. Where was she? He had to find her before anything happened to her!
"Merrick."
The gentle call of his name reached his ears even in the midst of the heavy snowstorm and immobilized him from taking even one more step forward. In that moment of stillness, he examined his surroundings through the snow.
He stood at the edge of a circular clearing in the middle of the forest. And, by all definitions, it was clear. Not a single snow flurry had fallen onto the lush green grass of the area that was tightly outlined by tall, protective trees. It was a pristine haven from the cold, miserable chaos that Eaglezord brought on the wings of Her flight.
In the middle of this divine clearing stood his motherholding onto his father.
Ephane appeared looked just as Merrick remembered from his toddler memories. He was tall and his stance was protective over his wife, holding her to his chest closely. Unfortunately, from where he stood, the son could see no more of his father. He sought to move closer, to step into the magical circle of warmth, but his mother's look prevented him from doing such a thing.
Opaline's dark brown eyes seemed to pierce Merrick's soul even from far away as she stared at him, her head resting on Ephane's shoulder as she seemingly clung to her first love. No, the stare said, you can't come. We have to leave you.
The snow seemed to be triggered by Merrick's mood, and it began to fall even harder as dark dread overwhelmed him. Ephane gently guided Opaline away from the clearing, and he was forced to watch, silent and still, as they left him completely alone.
Tears trickled down the child's cheeks, warming them momentarily before the snow's wrath took over once more, bringing on more coldness. He tried to call to them as they disappeared into the darkness of the trees, but Merrick that he was unable to vocalize his protests.

"Wake up Come on, you're going to freeze to death if you don't wake up"
The stranger was crouched over Merrick's body, shaking him gently, trying to get him up and out of the snow. It's beautiful black stallion stood nearby, watching as his rider tried valiantly to get the young boy to safety.
Bundled in a heavy, worn gray cloak, the stranger continued to poke at Merrick's body for awhile before eventually giving up. They stood up, slightly frustrated, and glanced over at their horse. "What do you think, Shia? Should we leave him here or take him home?"
Shia shook his head, his mane thrashing lightly. He glared at his rider as if he had been insulted by the question, neighed, and then huffed twice.
The stranger chuckled at their horse's reply. "I knew you would think that; you're right, he would die if we didn't take him home." The horse's rider glanced down at Merrick's sprawled form into the snow for a long moment, before kneeling back down and carefully hefting the boy up.
Struggling with the limp body, the stranger draped one of Merrick's arms over their shoulders and sort of dragged him over to the horse. More exertion ensued to get Merrick up and over Shia's back, but eventually the task was done with Merrick lying on his stomach.
Quickly, the stranger mounted their horse and took off in a trot through melting snow.
